I’ve got lots to be thankful for this year; every year, really. Last year, in a calorically criminal culinary coup, I managed to sample every single pie from the abundant offerings of Emily’s parents’ Thanksgiving table. Pie represents that bit of life that is truly superfluous and indulgent, and yet so integral to this particular holiday. For me – and I realize I’m waxing philosophic about pie here and that’s simultaneously ridiculous and awesome – Thanksgiving pie is a reminder that somehow amongst all of the troubles and worries of the year, the deaths and sicknesses and daily injustices we all witness, there are simple things that bring joy. Simplicity and small efforts are every bit as important as all of the things you’re thankful for. Sometimes, indulging yourself is a way of giving yourself a bit of thanks. Embracing this small thing on this one day has a way of holding you momentarily in a bliss where all of those worries are not present. That we give thanks and appreciate all of that in that moment: that is the gift. Give thanks: enjoy your pie, people!
